Google +1 Button

Testing for the Google +1 functionality has been going on since March. Since the first of June 1, due to popular demand, the new +1 feature is available in code form to be added to your sites own code. This will allow for Google +1 button clicking on individual pages that you are currently viewing. Previously the Google +1 button was only found on the search engine results page. This functionality is sure to have an impact on your site and the organic ranking of it’s content. To what extent the impact will be felt is not known yet. Some people believe that Social Metrics and Google +1 functionality will eventually surpass the weighting of links and “back-links” to individual pages.

Google +1 Code

The Google +1 Button lends credence to this Social Metric theory as this will enhance the social results you get when performing searches. You may have noticed that when you search for terms now, you will often get a short social section near the bottom (sometimes the top) of your first page of results. This area is filled with content that your “network” has shared or posted; on their own pages, or through Twitter, Tumblr or related Social Networks. It will now also include pages that people in your “network” have given the +1 to. If it’s relevant to people in your social and business circle, chances are that it will be relevant to you as well.

This is currently available only for English searches on google.com but will be expanding. The code for on-page display itself is very simple and provided by Google Webmaster Tools. There are already several plug-ins for WordPress and various content management systems that will implement this functionality on-post and on-page. Some of the most recent social experiments from Google haven’t done so well, but this one has a good chance to succeed as it works much like the like button on Facebook. It probably best to adopt earlier to get that Google +1 count rolling now.

The Google +1 “Buzz”

Seo.com wonders if this will be another social failure from google:

With such failures as Orkut and Buzz, Google has been relentlessly trying to get into the social space–and this +1 thing, may be their opportunity. While Google has a wide reach of users because of its products (e.g., Gmail, Google Analytics, etc.), Google has not been good at connecting users like Facebook does. For instance, when I signed up for Google Buzz, I only found 50+ Buzz friends to follow. Many believe that the new +1 feature will be more visible because it’s existence right on the SERP.

PrimaryPosition believe it will give “balance” to the Google algorithms:

By giving users a vote on pages – it essentially starts to move to balance out the guesswork by the algorithm. For example, if users keep picking the first few sites that rank but they get less likes than other sites – it makes sense for Google to shake up the mix a bit.

Ultimately, adoption of the Google +1 function will be up to the users. With the buttons appearing directly on SERP pages, we believe it has a good chance of being utilized. The addition of on-page functionality also means that your site will get a boost based on quality design and content, which is what the good companies and bloggers are striving for anyways. This may help put the emphasis back on quality, original writing and artistic representation and away from the robots and gimmicks associated with gaining back-links and the like.

If you’re familiar with search engine optimization, you know that one way links from authority websites have been the most important SEO factor for a number of years. As Facebook’s market penetration continues to grow, search engines are learning to look to it for cues about what’s popular. Some of what we pointed to in a post SEO Benefits of Social Media Marketing has been confirmed by the team at SEOMoz. In a recent post Rand Fishkin provides empirical evidence pointing to search engine ranking benefits from Facebook user activity which includes links to your website, particularly shares.

Facebook+Twitter’s Influence on Google Search Rankings

Facebook Share Action

When a user posts a link to your site on his wall, your site receives SEO benefit. While some users may post your link on their Facebook profile on their own, a share widget can make this much more likely. The major search engines seems to have an easier time counting the number of links from FB profiles than counting “likes”. Additionally, the researchers at SEOMoz were surprised to see less benefit springing from Twitter links than was previously anticipated. A Facebook share widgets, like the one at the top right of this page(which you should go ahead and use right now… I’ll wait…), create an easy way to quickly sign in, and post a link to this page,

Get Social

Whether your plan is to post links yourself on profile and business pages or to put share buttons on your website and browbeat visitors into using them, getting social is key. What’s the hands down easiest way to get Facebook shares? Post ‘em yourself! A little shameless self promotion never hurt anyone. When looking to build your fan base, you’ll want to build a custom Facebook business page, and run display banner ads. Once you’ve obtained a few hundred, or a few thousand fans, you’ll have an audience of people who are already interested in what you sell. Special offers and incentives delivered as a trusted to your existing clientele friend through Facebook have extremely high conversion rates. Businesses who are capitalizing on these opportunities are seeing both direct and indirect benefits.

When I see a post like this it raises to me an interesting question. Why is Aaron Wall, a search engine marketing professional who has generated literally millions of dollars of revenue for his own and his client’s businesses, pleading the case for SEO to business managers?

The SEO Knowledge Gap

SEO is hard. There’s a lot to it. Modern search engines look for hundreds of key indicators when picking the top search results for competitive keywords. Google is also famously unclear on exactly what those ranking factors might be, though they do provide a very elementary guide and some information support through the Google Webmaster Forum. Difficulty in communicating SEO processes to business owners may be a part of their reluctance to dedicate the necessary resources.

Search Engine Optimization

In many circles utterances regarding “seo” draw strange looks and blank stares. Among many business owners organic SEO is a big part of their success story. But those who’ve been double crossed by organic search engine marketing providers, the search engines themselves, or both, may just feel like giving up.

Vice may be had in abundance without trouble… But before virtue the gods have set toil – Socrates

For a business to full take advantage of search engine optimization, the leadership must decide to make a conscious effort and dedicate the necessary resources to come up first. It is never easy to one up enough of your competitors to make the first page, but through consistent thoughtful effort, it is certainly achievable. There are a lot of technical and marketing requirements to be met. Since every market is different, the only way to find out what the necessary actions are is to become, or work with, a search engine optimization professional, and do the small things every day to build quality content, relevant links, and positive user generated buzz.

Road Map to the First Page

At Global Market Exposure our search engine marketing experts will analyze your market and provide you with a plan to reach the first page for your target keywords. Working with an experienced SEO company will help lay the foundation needed to produce serious traffic from Google. Contact us to receive a free initial report and to get started today.

The team over at seomoz has been conducting surveys for a years, intending to better understand which factors top search engine optimization professionals think are most important to Google rankings. At SMX Munich Rand Fishkin presented the results of the most recent survey and compared it with the 2009 survey. You’ll find the results in graphical format below, but first a few notes on the ranking factors themselves.

Metrics on both surveys

Page-Level Link Metrics

The number and quality of links pointed to a specific website page

Domain-Level, Link Authority Features

Generally, what is the number and quality of links pointed to the entire domain.

Page-Level Keyword Usage

How keyword relevant is the specific website page.

Page-Level Keyword Agnostic Features

This includes minor ranking factors like load time, name server reputation, and other technical factors

Page-Level Social Data

This includes links to the page from social networking and bookmarking sites.

Domain-Level Keyword Agnostic Features

This includes technical factors similar to page level agnostic features, but includes data for the website as a whole

New Metrics for 2011

Page-Level Traffic/Query Data

Now Google considers, not only domain traffic overall, but also traffic a specific page. Higher traffic pages are seen as more important, and rank higher.

Domain Level Brand Metrics

This has to do with overall traffic, online reputation, and target market. Brands which are recognized as an authority in a certain market will enjoy higher rankings for related searches.

Domain Level Keyword Useage

When the relevant keywords are used throughout the site, the site is more likely to appear for related searches.

Understanding the Charts

Looking at the charts above, you can see that seo ranking factors have become more diverse. Where page and domain link authority used to make up over 60% of the equation, they now combine for only 43%. Page level keyword importance did not change much. This survey also recognizes the increasing importance of social media indicators. The biggest change overall is the drop in the importance of page level link metrics. Rather than focus on how many external links a particular page has, Google is now looking more to social indicators, and overall brand impression.

What does this mean for my SEO campaign?

As search engine optimization becomes even more complex, and ranking factors get more diverse and complicated, working with a professional SEO marketing company only becomes more important. Many tactics which worked quite well under old ranking algorithms are now ineffective. Staying on top of changes to the Google algorithm is the only way to earn and retain a competitive advantage in the search engine wars.

The morning of Feb 23rd, 2011 marked the release of WordPress codename revision “Django”. Django is named after the 1920-30s jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt. WordPress has kept a schedule of fairly regular updates and most of them have been maintenance related. As they stated after the 3.0 release, the year following, more of their resources would be spent on community development and improvement. The WordPress 3.1 release signals that they are still implementing new tweaks and features during this time as well. You can see some of the major updates and additions down below.

WordPress continues to lead the way in Content Management Systems. WordPress is the CMS of choice here at Global and we a couldn’t be happier to see the constant improvement and development of this system. We recommend it for both personal and business implementations alike as it has an use of use an flexibility unmatched on the market (no disrespect to other software like Joomla which has many great features of it’s own). WordPress has the ability to be a simple blog for a personal site or run full-fledged e-commerce setups and that’s why it’s our CMS of choice.

WordPress 3.1 Features:

Lord Kelvin

This is not your web guy’s hit tracker

Global Stats tracking provides website traffic information in real time. This information allows the use of real world data to continually optimize your campaign performance. By closely monitoring which keyword search phrases produce paying customers we can focus resources on top converting keywords. Here are a few screen shots from one of our website tracking accounts. Please keep in mind that the conversions number only counts online booking and rate requests through contact forms. Phone call tracking stats are found in a separate account.

Basics Tab

The “Basics” tab displays general information for daily, weekly, monthly or custom time frame traffic. A visitor is recorded every someone views the website. An action is occurs when a person views additional pages. (i.e. user lands on homepage, clicks to services, clicks to contact, 3 actions). Bounce rate is an important metric which tells us how many visitors click back off the website within the first 10 seconds of their visit.

Visitors Tab

The visitors graph displays overall traffic trends over the selected time frame.

Searches Tab

The “Searches” tab shows how many times a user visited your website after searching a particular keyword. Since conversion tracking is installed, it also shows how many people completed a conversion goal after visiting the website using that particular keyword.

Searches, Engines tab

As you can see this separates your site traffic by search engine. Global Stats real time tracking also has dozens of other useful tabs and ways to sort your web analytics data. Before real time web tracking, business owners said truthfully, “Half of my advertising doesn’t work, I just don’t know which half”. Let us help you get the tools you need to track every visitor on your site from Google search to sales conversion.
