According to a new study referenced in this article on Transworld Business about MasterCard, eCommerce sales show large increase in August. Apparel was the leader of all categories with nearly 13 1/2% in growth from the previous year. In fact, apparel sales continue their climb, showing a nearly 4% gain from the 2009 fiscal year. September continued this trend with a nearly 8% increase over August with apparel again leading the way. eCommerce footwear sales also had a strong showing with a 9% year-over-year increase.
MasterCard Advisors SpendingPulse is a macro-economic report tracker for national retail industries services and sales. Their reported stated that, “sales continued to show tepid growth compared with retail sale a year ago. From a sector-by-sector point of view, some categories built on the momentum from August while others showed lacklsuter performance, tending towards the flat to slightly down, compared to the same month in 2009.”
Michael McNamare, the VP of Resech and Analysis for the SpendingPulse program noted that, “Overall, September continued the pattern we have observed of consumers spending selectively and leaning towards non-discretionary rather than discretionary items. Variables to keep in mind when looking at spending across the country are regional extremes putting a damper on some sectors while helping others. The strong performance of the financial markets, which often helps the higher-end sectors, did not appear to do so in September. The month benefited from late back-to-school shopping, with some apparel shopping pushed back from August to September as parents postpone fall and winter purchases until the cooler weather arrives.”
In consecutive months, Total United States Apparel Sales post a year-over-year increase at 3.8% a nice gain over the 2.6% raise during the month of August. As this years 2nd biggest year-over-year gain for the sector, the industry has now shown gains six out of nine months running. Just like in August, the Family and Child-based segments pushed categorical growth, increases were 2.3% followed by 7.9%. Footwear showed a modest increase of .7%, only slightly lower than the previous .9% gain during the month of August. Again, much like in August, the Male and Female categories were the only sectors decreasing. Women’s dropped .2%, a smaller loss than August, and Men’s decrease nearly 3 1/2% year-over-year.

CTR or click through rate is an important metric we use to measure the effectiveness of an ad. Click through rate is defined as the percentage derived from dividing the number of times a user clicks on an ad (clicks) by the number of users who view the ad (impressions). Click through rates vary widely depending upon the venue. Google, Bing and Yahoo ads search engine text ads attract many more clicks per user who views the ads than banner ads.
CTR Click Through Rate Google, Yahoo, Bing
Google Click Through Rate
A high click through rate tells the advertiser that his ad is relevant and useful to the users who are seeing it. By earning an above average click through rate, you prove that your ad is relevant. This provides several benefits including lower cost per acquisition, higher average position (aka ad rank), and more traffic. The system wide average for Google CTR is just over 1.5%. Our Google Advertising professionals will craft your ad to earn the highest possible relevancy score. We often achieve click through rates over 10% for our clients. The screen shot to the left shows a CTR we earned for a real estate client.
CTR Click Through Rate Social Media Sites
Facebook Click Through Rate
Banner advertising is fundamentally different than search marketing. When a user see’s your Bing or Yahoo ad, they are actively searching for information related to your products or services. With display advertising they are surfing a news site, talking with friends through social media, or doing other things which are usually not related to your business. Because the user’s intent is usually something other than interacting with your advertising, banner ads produce much lower click through rates than search ads. CTR is still important. As with search ads, banner advertisers will enjoy reduced prices and more traffic if they achieve higher click through rates.

Compliant Code Website
Have a compliant code website is one of the first steps towards Google compliance. A search engine optimized compliant website means that your web design is built while following all of the W3C (World Wide Web Consortium) code standards. This means that all of the HTML/xHTML, php and any other web code meets modern day practices and standards. W3C compliant code websites are more efficient, use the latest and most optimized code and removing old deprecated code to meet all of the new standards. Web design from the Global Market Exposure team always has compliance in mind as the first step towards Google Compliance.
